About the Music Department

UIC currently offers five music degrees:

The Department of Music emphasizes skills and knowledge that are fundamental to the entire discipline. Core course requirements for all music students include:

  • Two years of music theory, aural skills, and piano
  • Five semesters of history and literature
  • Courses in analysis and ethnomusicology

Beyond the core courses, each of the degrees adds more focused courses in arranging, literature, and history.

The Performance degree offers opportunities for study in piano, voice, orchestral, and band instruments with some of Chicago’s most outstanding artist-teachers. For those who qualify for Jazz Studies, the program provides private study and small ensemble work with leading Chicago jazz artists. To be fully considered for Performance or Jazz Studies, students must perform an audition for UIC Faculty. See the Degree page for more information on specific courses and credit hours.

Because the Department of Music is committed to teaching and training individuals for music careers, many of the program’s graduates find employment as performers, teachers, or composers in a wide variety of settings. Others pursue advanced music degrees. For more information on degree requirements or auditions, see our admissions page

We’ll meet you where you are and take you where you want to go.
