The Bachelor of Music in Music Education prepares students at the University of Illinois Chicago for rewarding careers as culturally responsive music teachers in large urban school districts.

  • Learn how to teach banda, mariachi, and salsa; brass; jazz; percussion; popular music; strings; voice; and woodwinds. 
  • Take courses in Urban EducationBlack Cultural Studies, Latin American Music, Teaching Music to ChildrenParticipatory and Digital Music Practices; and Music Teaching in Ensemble Settings.
  • Learn about child development in contemporary society, how to develop multiple language and music literacies, and how to accommodate and evaluate all types of learners.
  • Gain practical skills through internships with area music programs and partnerships with teachers in Chicago Public Schools. 
  • Become an Illinois State licensed music teacher.
